Bemidji State University, or BSU for short, is a public state university in Bemidji, which is the county seat of Beltrami County, situated in the US state of Minnesota, with a population estimated at a number of more than 13 000 inhabitants, during the 2007 census. Bemidji, also known as the ''curling capital'', of the U.S, is also the largest commercial center between Grand Forks, ND and Duluth, MN, and the most major city in North Central Minnesota.
BSU was established in 1919, first starting as Bemidji State Normal School, name which later became Bemidji State Teachers College, which was shorted to Bemidji State College, after which, the institution finally adopted its current name. BSU currently has a total enrollment of more than 5000 students, and offers numerous educational programs, in various fields of study, including the only BFA in Professional and Creative Writing in the MnSCU system.
BSU's athletic teams are known as the Beavers, who compete in NCAA Division II, for all sports, except for men's and women's ice hockey, in which they compete in NCAA Division I. Their distinctive colors are green and white.
Joel Otto, NHL center, and Matt Clime, NHL goalie, are Bemidji State University's noteworthy alumni.
